At least 14
people have been killed during heavy
rains and strong winds that have
plagued several parts of Indonesia
since Wednesday, the National
Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB)
has reported. “The BNPB has recorded
that 35 regencies and cities in Java
and Bali were hit by tornadoes,”
BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho
said in a press statement on Sunday.
“As a result, 14 people have died,
60 are injured and 2,364 houses are
damaged. The level of damage varies
from building collapses to minor
damage … generally because of trees
falling on houses or winds blowing
away roofs.”
Of the 14
deaths from fallen trees, three
occurred in Tabanan, Bali, three in
Purbalingga, Central Java, two in
Kediri, East Java, and two in
Banyumas, Central Java, the BNPB
said. Deaths also occurred in South
Jakarta, Wonosobo, Ciamis and
Pasuruan. The BNPB listed the
affected regions in West Java as
Bandung, Bekasi, Ciamis, Cianjur,
Garut, Indramayu, Kuningan,
Majalengka, Sukabumi and Tasikmalaya,
and in Jakarta as South Jakarta and
the Thousand Islands. In Banten,
Lebak, Tangerang and Pandeglang were
affected, along with Banjarnegara,
Banyumas, Boyolali, Magelang,
Purbalingga, Semarang and Wonosobo
in Central Java. Sleman in
Yogyakarta and Bangkalan, Blitar,
Jember, Kediri, Magetan, Malang,
Ngawi, Pasuruan, Ponorogo, Situbondo
and Sumenep in East Java were also
hit.
In Bali, Tabanan and Denpasar were affected
